Why China Document Authentication Still Requires Consular Legalization for Indian Documents
China became a party to the Hague Apostille Convention in 2023, but India formally objected to China’s accession. As a result, China Document Authentication for Indian documents used in mainland China continues to follow the applicable Indian authentication and Chinese consular legalization route instead of relying on an apostille alone.
- China’s Apostille Convention entry took effect on 7 November 2023
- India lodged an objection to China’s accession under Article 12
- The Convention therefore does not operate between India and mainland China
- Indian-origin documents must complete the applicable domestic authentication steps first
- MEA attestation is required before Chinese consular legalization in the standard route
- The receiving authority in China determines which finalized document it will accept
